On Friday, September 18, a full field of golfers filled The Architects Golf Club in memory of John Robert Angelo and turned a day of golf into real help for families facing a blood cancer diagnosis. Year two was our first as the JRA Foundation — and the whole reason we do this became real the week after, when the very first family got the help they needed. Here’s a look back at the day you made happen.
The day, in pieces
A few things that mattered more than we planned for.
At 1 : 00 the course went quiet, then loud.
Twenty-four foursomes on eighteen tees. A beat of silence. Then a hundred drivers swung at the same time. The sound rolled across the fairways and into the clubhouse, and the weight of everything that goes into a day like this turned into a thing you could actually hear.
A perfect September day.
Blue skies, warm sun, not a drop of rain. The kind of early-fall afternoon the course was built for.
“My partner was in treatment for 6 months and the gas, travel and lodging expenses not covered by insurance really drained us. Your mission to help people with these costs is something a lot of families need as they go through treatment.”
The first family.
Days after the round, the money in the room stopped being a number. The JRA Foundation made its very first family-assistance disbursement — helping a family cover the real costs that come with treatment. That is the whole reason this day exists.
The auction and raffle carried the night.
From a Broadway package to prestige wines to a signed Jake Elliott photo, the boards were stacked. The bidding ran hot right up to the close, and the room turned generosity into real dollars for families.

Closest-to-the-pin for a sliding pot, longest drive, straightest drive, a putting contest at the turn — the on-course games kept the round loud and added to the total, one swing at a time.
