Why We Play

His Fight
Became Our Mission

In 2019, our founder Bryan Angelo lost his father John to an aggressive blood cancer called Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma. John was an avid golfer. The course was where he found his peace, connected with friends and family, and let the world slow down. His resilience during treatment, his refusal to stop fighting, and the joy he carried onto every fairway became the foundation for this event.

The Resilient Open began in 2025 as part of Bryan's Visionaries of the Year campaign with Blood Cancer United. What started as one son's tribute has grown into something bigger: a community-driven event under the JRA Foundation that provides direct support to families navigating blood cancer treatment — and channels additional funding to Blood Cancer United to advance the research that will end this disease.

This tournament isn't just about remembering John. It's about making sure his fight leads somewhere. Every swing, every sponsor, every dollar moves us closer to a future where fewer families hear the words that changed ours.

His resilience became our mission. His peace became our purpose.

Where Your Impact Lands

Two Ways
Every Dollar Works

Every dollar raised through The Resilient Open is directed to two places. First, the JRA Foundation Family Support Programs — providing direct financial assistance, resources, and community to families currently navigating blood cancer treatment, because the bills don’t stop when treatment starts. Second, Blood Cancer United (formerly The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) — a research and advocacy organization we choose to support for their work funding clinical trials and patient care across all 100+ types of blood cancer.

42%
Of cancer patients exhaust their life savings within two years of diagnosis
1 in 3
Patients skip or delay treatment because of cost
62%
Of cancer programs identify transportation as the top barrier to care
79%
Higher risk of death for patients who go bankrupt after diagnosis

Know Before You Go

Quick answers.

The things people ask first. Full FAQ over here.

What’s the format?

4-person scramble, shotgun start at 1:00 PM sharp. 18 holes, all teams teeing off at once. Keep the pace — no scoring higher than a bogey. Five on-course contests (straightest drive, longest drive M+W, closest to pin M+W, $10K hole-in-one on 17, pre-round putting). Round runs roughly 4–5 hours.

What’s included with registration?

Greens fees, cart, bag drop, range access, player gift, Halfway House meal (hot dog or cheeseburger + drink), and the awards dinner with buffet. VIP Foursome adds Founding Circle perks — limited-edition pin, curated welcome gift, name in the program. Social Attendees get dinner + program only.

Where does the money go?

Every net dollar moves in one direction: JRA Foundation family support programs — rides to chemo, groceries, rent, the things insurance doesn’t cover for families navigating a blood cancer diagnosis. Additional proceeds fund Blood Cancer United research to accelerate treatment advances. Year one raised $35,267 toward the mission.

How does registration work?

Five quick steps on resilientopen.com/register: package, golfer info, add-ons, optional donation, payment. Stripe handles the charge. You get an instant confirmation email with a QR code and team details, and your spot is locked in. Captains pay for the whole foursome and can fill in teammates during checkout or later via the captain page we email.

How does digital scoring work? (And why?)

Every foursome gets a team code. Any teammate enters it on their phone and logs scores hole-by-hole — auto-sum, handles mulligans, pushes live to the public leaderboard so the clubhouse and social attendees can track the field in real time. No app install, just a web page.

Why digital over paper: speed (results final the moment the last team posts 18), transparency (public leaderboard creates healthy pressure), accuracy (math errors eliminated). Paper scorecards are still available at check-in for personal use — digital is the official scoring for prizes. If your whole foursome wants off phones, flag us at check-in and a volunteer handles entry.

What’s the refund policy?

We get it — things come up. Our policy:

  • More than 30 days out: full refund
  • 14–30 days out: 50% refund
  • Less than 14 days out: no refund, but we’ll let you transfer the spot to someone else (just email us)
